Cheering Chicago
Posted on Friday, October 28 @ 11:14:36 PDT by Red
Rants The White Sox victory parade rolled past my workplace just an hour ago. The street was packed shoulder to shoulder with cheering Chicagoans and honking horns...horns honked not out of frustration, but in celebration...

If I had to choose between various traffic jams to be stuck in, I'd pick the White Sox one any day.

I got to thinking about the tremendous amount of support the Sox have received lately. True, the city is split between the white collar Cubs fans in the north and the blue collar Sox fans in the south, but the excitement over the White Sox going to the World Series and sweeping the Astros in four games was a lot crazier than I thought it would be. I saw Cubs fans cheering on the Sox, something I never thought I'd see before. It was a first.

Speaking of firsts, there was hardly any (at least that I heard) of the typical bandwagon-bashing that arises whenever a bad team suddenly gets hot. The city went through a lot of that when the Cubs were in contention for the DLCS two years ago; it always pissed me off when I'd hear hardcore fans trash talk the fairweather fans who donned their Cubs gear only when the Cubs started winning. What do they expect the rest of the city to do? Root against their home team?

But again, there was none of that this time around...at least once the Sox won the pennant and the dusty 88 year-old dream became a reality. Perhaps Chicagoans just liked the idea of "Chicago" finally up in the World Series marquee and decided to cheer together? Whatever the reason, it made me proud to be a Chicagoan. And though my roots will always be in Hawaii, Chicago has treated me well. It is my home.

It's a good place to be. Especially when you're on top.

Go Sox. Go Chicago!
