I went through the archives and did a load of fixes, so if you were looking through them lately and found problems, they should be fixed now.

Executive excess

3dfx Lamp

Well 3dfx didn't have enough money to keep itself afloat, but it DID have enough money to make these snazzy 3dfx tiffany lamps for its execs. One was for sale on eBay a little while ago, but even after being [H]ardOCP'd, it only mustered $51. I'm not going to mirror that auction, so when the link dies, it dies. I must say, as tacky as these things are, there's something kinda cool about 'em.

RIAA, courts, get a clue

AOL has escaped a lawsuit in the US after one of its subscribers used the ISP's service to sell child porn.

The Florida Supreme Court ruled yesterday, by a vote of four to three, that AOL could not be prosecuted for illegal sales taking place through its service.

Data conduits CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE for content that travels over them! Responsibility lies with the user! Get that through your thick fucking skulls! Hmm let me venture an analogy ... it would be like holding Ferarri responsible for all the speeding done by Ferarri drivers because "Ferarris facilitate speeding." Hit up the full story here.

Bean rejuvenation

Well we posted a few articles about this stuff, so check out Dr. Matlock, who actually does laser vaginal rejuvenation and designer vaginoplasty.

Evil empire

So while you weren't looking, the evil AOL (-Time Warner) Empire has slipped it to you yet again ... now you've got an annoying ad browser at the bottom of your ICQ message windows. "Please god, make it stop!" you shriek. But you get no divine intervention. Instead, take matters into your own hands and free yourself from your manacles. WARNING: I have not tested the .dll deletion method yet, but the SMS button remover works. I'll test and compile this information into an article sometime soon.

Interestingly, the thread that message is a part of was once a sub-thread under a different posting, one which specifically lamented the existence of said browser window. It seems ICQ has cut that thread of posting out, leaving only this unexplained "The problem is caused by ..." thread.

If you raised your eyebrows at this (in surprised understanding, not clueless confusion), you just might be l33t.

12 Year Old to Life

A 14 year old gets sentenced to life in prison for a crime committed when he was 12 years old. Check it out here. For another opinion of it, try here.

[rant]What kind of society are we when we put someone away for life for something they did when they were 12 years old. The US is constantly screaming about human rights except when it applies to themselves. I'm sure everyone has done some pretty bad stuff when we were young, but could we do anything that bad. I mean, it's a damm kid. 12 years old. Enough of this charging kids as adults. They're kids, aren't they?[/rant]

Got my 128MB stick for my laptop, talk about worlds of difference. Gotta love cheap memory -- just $60 to my door. Thanks to Memoryempire for making it a relatively painless transaction. They do a lot of eBaying, so you can beat their listed prices pretty easily, and they ship US postal. Now if they would just get rid of that stupid tail on your cursor when you go to their page ...

Palm releases M105

M105

Palm has officially announced the M105, a spiffy-looking successor to the M100 budget PDA. The main difference between the M100 and M105 is the 8MB memory in the 105 (vs. 2MB in the 100). If you ask me, the M100/105 series is lacking some key features, the most major of which is a lack of flash ROM -- meaning no OS updates should Palm ever release PalmOS 4.0. And since the 105 ships with PalmOS 3.5.1, you don't even get the newest OS out (3.5.2). At a price of $199, you'd be better off getting a Palm IIIxe for $179.

But wait! Palm has sneakily phased out the IIIxe -- there are no MSRPs on the site, you can't find it in the Palm store and not on some of Palm's major resellers. Savvy Tokenasians readers take note -- if you want a good PDA with 8MB memory, run out and get a IIIxe NOW, because they are going to go like wildfire and new ones aren't being made.

WIPO does "good"

It's fairly rare, but WIPO has made a decision regarding www.yourmove.com that we (and normal people everywhere) agree with. It decided that Scottish businessman Irving Remocker is fully entitled to the domain name and can do with it what he wishes.
Neither I nor The Reg can hide our disdain for WIPO. Even when they rule in favor of the little guy (for once). Hit up the full story here.

Also from The Reg: Hackers redirect Hamas site to serve up porn. I would have headlined it "Ooh allah-la-la".

"Napster" going out of country?

Young Canadian computer science student Matt Goyer claims to be preparing to set up a Napster clone with HavenCo, which operates out of the ludicrous principality of Sealand, to evade recording industry lawyers, according to a story in Monday's Globe and Mail.
Most are saying this is a bunch of hooey, but who knows, especially since this article has been Slashdotted. Hit up the full story here.

Mr. Wong, R.I.P.

Wong RIP

Well I've been wondering for a little while why I couldn't access Icebox.com, and today I finally came out of denial and checked fuckedcompany.com for any news. Sure enough, Icebox pulled the plug in February. This depresses me somewhat, but after reading a little about the way Icebox was run, it seems like they didn't have much of a business model to begin with. Still, they had great content. Anyway, here are some links to media on the foldup:

Here's an Ebay page that has a Mr. Wong art piece for sale. It's mirrored here and preserved for posterity -- I can't believe someone actually paid $1k for it!

And some alternate cartoon entertainment sites:

So to all you out there who didn't check out Icebox when I told you to -- it's too fuckin' late now!

Hockey happenings

Some major, major trade news today: 7-time all star Teemu Selanne, who was with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, was traded a little north to the San Jose Sharks. Also recently, the St. Louis Blues acquired d-man Alexei Gusarov from the New York Rangers in return for defenseman Peter Smrek.

I will copy if it kills me

Forget the Serial Copy Management System, music fans. Macrovision Corporation is taking CD copy prevention to the next level. The folks who made it impossible to loop your DVD player through your VCR want to make sure you can't copy new music either. On February 27, Sunnyvale, CA-based Macrovision announced that it will begin beta-testing its "Safeaudio Toolkit," a CD-audio copy-protection technology. One major record label has already completed its own testing, according to an official statement. Macrovision announced its intention to go forward with the technology late last year.
Well, if this is a hardware-reliant solution, i.e. you need new hardware to access these discs, I don't think it will fly. Macrovision was right there when DVD players began to spread like wildfire, but normal CD players are literally everywhere already. The penetration is too great -- nobody is going to buy a new CD player to play a fucking copy-protected disc. And if they play on normal CD players ... well then ripping should be no problem. My guess is this goes the way of DivX pay-per-play DVDs.

Can't hide your plam Pr0n

Passwords and data can easily be obtained through a backdoor in Palm OS, even if a Palm device is "locked".

That's the conclusion of researchers at security firm @stake who have discovered that the "system lockout" function in Palm OS security, which means a device will not work until the correct password is entered, can easily be bypassed.
