Some summit
Well there's a lot going on outside the Summit of the Americas, but as seen above,
theres a lot going on inside too, especially with Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso and U.S. President Bush.
Hockey news
Man what's the deal? My picking a team is like the kiss of death. Anyway, half the first round matches are decided.
Today's action:
- The Buffalo Sabres put the dirty hurts on the Philadelphia Flyers, closing out their
series with an 8-0 win in Buffalo. It's somewhat ironic that Flyers' goalie Roman Cechmanek, whose stellar play during
the season got them to the playoffs, allowed 5 goals on the first 9 shots of this contest, essentially sealing Philly's fate.
- The LA Kings took advantage of a slumping Detroit Red Wings team, beating them in Detroit, to take
a 3-2 series lead. Startling turn of events for a team that was totally blown out in games 1 and 2 of the series.
- The St. Louis Blues ended the San Jose Sharks' playoff run with a 2-1 victory in the Shark
Tank. This game had an absolutely spectacular ending, with two tense faceoffs in the Blues' zone. After the game,
Sharks' winger Teemu Selanne revealed that he had been playing with a broken thumb since the first game of the series.
- The Pittsburgh Penguins edged out the Washington Capitals 2-1 for a 3-2 series lead going
back to Mellon Arena. Lemieux scored in this one, which featured an after-the-final-buzzer brawl in which Lemieux took a punch and
Jagr threw a few forearms.
Picks page updated ... Dallas-Edmonton game starting soon.
TRG's latest
Well Palmstation's got some advance pics
of the latest offering from TRG -- now Handera. It's a greyscale PalmOS device with compactflash AND smartdigital capability. It
comes with voice recorder, jog dial, 320x240 display with "virtual graffiti area", 4-AAA power with optional Li-Ion pack, 33mhz
Dragomball VZ, 8MB w/ 2MB flash memory, native landscape mode, all in a Palm III form factor ... everything you would want EXCEPT a color screen!
Ack! Having used both types of screens, I can honestly say I would never buy a greyscale device. Color adds too much functionality,
not to mention niceties. Pdabuzz has got a thread going on this new device also, here.
The terminator is next
After years of sci-fi nuts and phoney professors claiming they have built a cyborg - part machine, part living tissue - it
would appear that someone has actually done it.
I missed this a day or so ago. Interesting in a kinda eerie way.

Oops, almost forgot the jockey post.
Cup happenings
Well the St. Louis Blues put one past San Jose goalie Mikka Kiprusoff in OT to win yesterday,
giving them a 3-2 advantage as they head to San Jose for game 6.
Philly staved off elimination by Buffalo, winning 3-1 to make for a game 6 in Buffalo.
And Dallas pulled off a win in OT against the Edmonton Oilers, giving them a 3-2 lead going into game 6.

Whack-a-Flack
It takes a special kind of person to appreciate this little time waster.
You play a writer who has received an armload of petty, poorly-written P.R. releases from flacks at various P.R. firms. Yes, those of
us with journ degrees know -- the people that couldn't hack real journalism all went the P.R. route. Anyway your job is to nail as
many flacks as possible with their crappy releases -- folded into neat paper airplanes. Conceptually odd, but well executed.
New drug czar eyed
John Walters, a hard-liner who was former drug czar William Bennett's deputy during the first Bush administration, has
emerged as the leading candidate to become director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, according to a
knowledgeable drug policy source.
To quote Mr. Mackey, "Uhhh ... drugs are bad."

Matrox still exists?
A Matrox
rep at the AMD Tech Team dinner in Philadelphia tonight
provided solid info regarding Matrox's current and future
plans. To quote: '"G800 is completely dead." Apparently, the
G800 was 'based on G400 design' and featured doubled
pipelines, 128bit DDR memory, hardware transform and
lighting, and some form of dual-chip technology. A slimmed
down version will be hitting markets shortly, however. G550
is a single-chip solution featuring the same doubled
rendering pipelines, 128-bit DDR support, but only a limited
form of T&L. Word on the newest chip
and some "we're gonna kick yer butt in the future" shit
talking. Hit up the full story here.

honor their rebates and I get this for $350. Yeah they're
mail-ins, but a man can hope.

More BS violence
Okay, in the same vein as the Backstreey Boys interactive
anime the other day, here's your change to Peg
the "Backstraight" Boys with paintballs. The execution is
kind of weak, but the concept is certainly there.
Hockey post
From left to right:
- Well the Toronto
Maple Leafs swept the Ottawa Senators in the first round
of the 2001 Stanley Cup playoffs. Here, Toronto winger Shane
Corson picks
up brooms and brushes symbolically thrown on the ice.
- This is an odd looking photo of Colorado Avalanche
goalie Patrick
Roy losing his stick. Backed by Roy, the Avs swept
the Vancouver Canucks in the first round.
- The Carolina Hurricanes came
out fighting to avoid a sweep by the New Jersey Devils,
but are in quite a hole at 1 win to NJ's 3. Yes, Carolina
goalie Arturs
Irbe got a penalty on this play, as did his target, Petr
Sykora. Game recap here.

Internet advertising from the
inside
The banner
ad is a complete, unmitigated failure: When we look back on
this industry, it will be considered the biggest mistake we
ever made. Furthermore, the IAB is a complete, unmitigated
failure for sitting around and pretending that by making
them a little bigger they are going to work.
I have my own theories about the failure
of Internet advertising, and the solutions presented in this
article only address half the problem. Internet
advertisers have achieved a level of untrustworthiness
unparalleled anywhere -- it's so cheap to advertise on the
internet, any old shmoe can do it. The sneaky attempts to
install ad browsers on your computer and the popup ad have led
to a downright anger against those that advertise using these
methods. If I am interested in a product advertised through
these means, I will specifically type the site name into my
browser rather than click an ad link, just to shaft the
advertising company. Anyway, some form of regulation is needed
-- either industry self-regulation or external regulation --
to reverse these perceptions or interruption-based Internet
advertising will forever fail. The Internet is viewed as a
free entity, so it should come as no surprise that advertising
on it is largely an exercise in losing money. How's that for
pointless blather?

Stalnley Cup updates
Favored teams Philly and Ottawa have yet to win
a game, and face do-or-die situations tonight in game 3. Dallas pulled out a win despite

least will avoid a sweep. Lemieux gets physical in the quest to go one-up on the Capitals tonight.
And the San Jose Sharks evened it up against the Blues last night and will be looking for the series
lead tonight. Colorado and New Jersey are slaughtering as expected.
