Stormtroopers, mount up
Really, really want to be a stormtrooper this Halloween, check out this page and get cracking on it right now.
Pulled
SAN FRANCISCO -- Clothing maker Abercrombie & Fitch said on Thursday it was pulling a new line of Asian-themed T-shirts after Asian-American groups complained they were a blatant example of racist stereotyping.
The shirts, which retail for $25, hit the shelves this week and carry caricatures of slant-eyed Asians in conical hats along with such slogans as "WONG BROTHERS LAUNDRY SERVICE: TWO WONGS CAN MAKE IT WHITE" and "WOK-N-BOWL -- CHINESE FOOD AND BOWLING."
Did anyone even bother to read these things before they oked the prinitng? Hit up the full story here.
Raul's Rant:
There are several things about this company that strike me as I read about this debacle. First, that the designs were thought to be
funny and appealing to Asians in the first place.
Second, that there is no one on staff -- or in management -- that had any clue this stuff was in bad taste. Third, that they are having the
PR person try to explain it away as a honest error.
Here's the SF Chronicle article.
The company admits little -- blaming "some customers" being "offended" for the recall and saying "we poke fun at everybody". Such statements
only reinforce that fact that they have no idea they've done wrong -- and worse yet no remorse for doing so. The only thing separating these
designs from early 20th century exclusionary political cartoons and WWII-era racial propaganda is buck teeth -- which look right at home in the illustrations,
don't you think? In Hawaii, there have been many shirts that depict an Asian character with
slanted eyes, but they have not been offensive. Why? Because you have to understand Asian culture to poke fun at it.
For kicks, have a look around A&F's online catalog. Notice something about the models? Not only
are they all white, they are all model-A Aryans! It is any wonder this company doesn't understand Asian culture?
Free Ethnic Studies lesson: What's the difference between these depictions of Asian culture and say, depictions of a fighting Irish person or an
Italian mafioso? Would it have been any different if the depiction were of Asian martial artists? What about Hawaiian or Native American warrior
depictions? Discuss.
Pens suck
Yes, Pittsburgh sucked hard this year, but one can always be hopeful.

Kalo farming
This past weekend, we were at a lo'i (taro farm) in Waihe'e valley, just past Kahalu'u. It was part of a service learning project, but I got to play photog. Check out some pics
in the gallery.
Forsberg is back
Colorado Avalanche star center Peter Forsberg will probably return
for the first round of the playoffs against the Los Angeles Kings. This is a major boost for the Avs, and completely
reshuffles the playoff deck.
Special features
From Jui: DVD Easter Eggs is a site that catalogs special and "hidden" features found on
various DVDs. Pretty cool.
Nostromo reviewed
Monster Hardware has reviewed the N50 Nostromo game controller,
you know the funky one that has a compact keyboard layout? His idea of using the device for other than games gave me some inspiration to try
to adapt it to my work, but alas, there is no Mac support.
"It was just harmless fun ..."
What a great Mark Fiore lampoon of one of the most bullshit advertising campaigns of all time.
From Dr. Mikee.
What's the big idea?
Here's an interesting site submitted by Blake: Halfbakery
is an idea incubator of sorts, with the opportunity to comment and rate others' fictional inventions. It's kinda fun. Categories
run the gamut from business, to health, to food, to transportation.
Hatchery
Now this is a pretty manic page about one person's conspiracy theories. The author must have really
good conversations with the voices. It really is all a government hatch. Submitted by SK.
Kwak!
The London-based Royal Society for the Preservation of Birds has joined with Nokia to produce 38 "Bird Song
ringtones" that cause the phone to ring in the manner of the pied wagtail, lesser whitethroat, red-breasted
flycatcher, spotted crake and black-tailed godwit, among others."
