BYU entered the game without their #1 running back, Luke Staley, who broke his leg in a game last
week. He was replaced by Reno Mahe (20). |
UH's spectacular receiving corps promised a spectacular show, and led by Channon Harris (above) with
11 receptions, delivered. |
BYU was un-spectacular from the start, finding themselves unable to pull off big plays. |
UH's quarterback Nick Rolovich was on his "A" game from the start, and by end of the game had broken
school records to the tune of 543 passing yards and 8 completions for touchdowns. |
Hawaii's defense was fairly strong strong early, keeping BYU's scoring low ... |
... by breaking up passes ... |
... stifling the BYU's crippled running game ... |
... and forcing BYU to turn over the ball in fumbles SIX times. UH linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa played this game
after sitting out 3 games with a leg fracture. |
Nate Jackson (12), of course, was in on breaking up a few of those passes. |
Just before the half,
BYU QB Brandon Doman's touchdown attempt was stopped on the goal line ... and a crushing hit by UH linebacker Tinoisamoa
broke the ball loose and sent Doman to the sideline for the rest of the game. |
Doman was replaced by Charlie Peterson, who managed to score several times, but was cut no slack by UH. |
BYU tried running the ball. |
And tried passing it. |
And tried running it again, but it was not meant to be. As one commentator said, without Staley, the option play
BYU had used with success against other teams ... was not an option. |
UH kicker Justin Ayat had some problems with wind and missed one field goal and one point-after kick.
Luckily, they were not needed. Due to celebration penalties, Ayat kicked several PATs from the 35 and one from the 50. His one good FG was a 45-yarder. |

In the end, it just wasn't BYU's day. UH broke out the running game to run down the clock ... |
... and finished the game with final score of UH 72, BYU 45. |
The obligatory cheerleader shot. |
