Conclusion

I think it's fairly obvious from my comments thus far that I love the E-10. But I am realistic about its place in the pecking order of digicams, and will not hesitate to replace it when the time is right.

My background is in film SLRs, fully manual relics like Nikomats or AE-1s. I've been an on-and-off photography hobbyist/enthusiast for about 10 years. So naturally, when it came time to "go digital" for this Web site and for personal gratification, I wanted something that could capture the essence of a film SLR as closely as possible. My price range was $500-$1,000 originally, but I soon realized that the E-10 was the cheapest thing I was going to find that was anywhere near what I wanted.

The cameras that have come since (as of the time of this writing) have not changed my mind: the E-10 is the best choice if you are limited by funds but want something that can potentially replace a film SLR. It won't do everything a film SLR can, but maybe 80-90% of it, and you'll find that most of the time you leave your film SLR at home once you get one of these.

I had not "gone out" specifically to shoot pictures in years, but the E-10 brought the sheer joy of photography back. It's all in the almost-unmatched build and feel, and the excellent results with a minimum of effort.

It has been said that just about nothing beats the feel of the E-10 in your hand, and while I haven't felt "everything," I sure wouldn't doubt it.
